스티브 잡스가 죽었다. 많은 사람들이 스티브 잡스가 죽고나서 애플에 대해서 이러쿵 저러쿵 얘기가 많은데 물론 나도 그 중 한 명임에 틀림없다. 그야 관심사니까. 아이폰을 쓰다가 느낀 점과 스티브 잡스의 자서전을 읽다가 줄을 친 부분을 보고 향후 애플의 방향에 대해서 생각해보고자 한다.
End to End Control
(전략)He believed that for a computer to be truly great its hardware and its software had to be tightly linked. When a computer was open to running software that also worked on other computers, it would end up sacrificing some functionality. The best products, he believed, were “whole widgets” that were designed end-to-end, with the software closely tailored to the hardware and vice-versa. (중략) “Jobs is strong-willed, etlist artist who doesn’t want his creations mutated inauspiciously by unworthy programmers,” explained ZDNet’s editor Dan Farber. “It would be as if someone off the street added some brush strokes to a Picasso painting or changed the lyrics to a Dylan song.” In later years Jobs’s whole-widget approach would distinguish the iPhone, iPod, and iPad from their competitors. 후 부분에도 적혀 있듯이 모든 것을 장악하도록 만들어진 구조가 잡스의 일면을 보여준다. 이 책에는 잡스의 고집으로 확장을 포기하며 매킨토시의 단순함을 고집하게 된 계기와 한편으로 애플 직원이 아니면 맥을 열지 못하도록 전용 나사를 채택하게 된 일화 또한 소개되어 있다.
잡스가 죽으며 애플이 변했다고 하는데 정말 잡스가 죽으면서 애플이 변했다면 이러한 애플의 성격의 변화가 있을때, 찾아올 것이라고 생각한다. 애플의 단순함, 혹자는 폐쇄성이라고도 말하는 그러한 성격이 사라진다면 그때 잡스의 DNA가 완전히 사라지고 애플이 변하는 때가 올지도. 그런데 그게 애플일까? 라는 생각을 하게 된다. 그저그런 회사 중 하나가 되는거 아닌가…?
